European funding welcome, but fishing crisis remains unaffected

4.52.16pm GMT Wed 25th Nov 2009

Commenting on the announcement that Scotland's fisheries, aquaculture and processing sector is to receive a £9 million boost from the European Fisheries Fund, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson and Orkney MSP Liam McArthur said:

"As ever, the funding made available under the European Fisheries Fund is welcome.

"It will help support a number of excellent and valuable businesses and projects across the fishing, aquaculture and processing sectors.

"However, it is simply not credible for the Fisheries Secretary to claim that this, in any way, offsets the impact on our fishing fleet of the measures agreed at last week's Fisheries Council, measures put in place as a result of the agreement he signed up to last December."
