Finnie concerned at increased risk of diabetes in deprived areas11.29.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 27th Jul 2009 West of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Ross Finnie is very concerned that people living in the poorest parts of Scotland are more likely to get type 2 diabetes than those in affluent communities. In its new report, Diabetes UK Scotland said research had found the incidence of type 2 Diabetes was increasing at a higher rate in more deprived areas and those living in the poorest areas were 64% more likely to be diagnosed with the condition compared to people in the most affluent communities. The charity also warned that once people in deprived areas have Diabetes they are twice as likely to develop complications.Ross Finnie MSP: West of Scotland Commenting Mr Finnie said: “I am very concerned that people living in West Dunbartonshire are much more likely to get type 2 Diabetes than those living in East Dunbartonshire. “Individuals in West Dunbartonshire need to recognise the link between type 2 Diabetes and the high levels of obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and unhealthy diet that exist in the area. “The Government and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde must invest in preventive and anticipatory care, as educating the public on the dangers of diabetes as a priority. Notes: Type 2 Diabetes usually affects middle aged or older people, although more young people who are overweight are being diagnosed. Type 2 Diabetes can lead to Heart Disease, Strokes, Blindness and other life threatening diseases.
